About this webinar: Tinnitus is a multifactorial phenomenon. It may present as a condition in its own right or as a symptom associated with more than 200 distinct underlying factors. As such, there is no single cause and no universally applicable intervention. Although no definitive cure has been identified, contemporary scientific research offers substantial insight that can be applied to support individuals experiencing tinnitus.
This workshop provides a comprehensive, science-informed examination of tinnitus, drawing on current research in neuroscience, hearing science, psychology, and clinical hypnosis. It explores how belief systems, cognitive appraisal, and perceptual reframing influence tinnitus-related distress and how these mechanisms can be leveraged to improve individual outcomes.
Participants will examine tinnitus both as an independent condition and as a manifestation of broader physiological and psychological processes. Particular attention is given to outdated and potentially harmful narratives—such as the assumption that “nothing can be done”—which are still commonly communicated within clinical and social contexts and may contribute to the persistence of distress.
While a single curative intervention is unlikely given the heterogeneity of tinnitus, research demonstrates that hypnosis can significantly improve quality of life by reducing distress, altering attentional focus, and supporting adaptive self-regulation. This workshop situates clinical hypnosis within a broader integrative framework, highlighting its role alongside referral, collaboration, and evidence-based clinical judgment.
By translating current scientific findings into practical understanding, this workshop equips practitioners to work more effectively and ethically with individuals experiencing tinnitus, supporting more durable and meaningful outcomes.
We have one presenter: Astrid Harms
Aim: To provide a scientifically grounded understanding of tinnitus as a multifactorial condition influenced by cognitive, perceptual, and psychophysiological factors influence and to clarify the role and limitations of clinical hypnosis within an integrative, referral-aware framework.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand tinnitus as a condition and as a symptom of underlying factors, including common causes, triggers, and perpetuating mechanisms
- Apply current research from neuroscience, psychology, and hearing science to reframe maladaptive beliefs associated with tinnitus
- Identify what can realistically be achieved using clinical hypnosis and coaching, and determine when referral or interdisciplinary collaboration is indicated
Astrid Harms – Astrid Harms is a hypnotherapist and coach based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, working primarily online with individuals internationally. She holds a degree in technical communication and has a professional background in television and media, which informs her ability to research, synthesise, and clearly communicate complex material.
Her clinical focus includes tinnitus and other chronic or multifactorial conditions. This has led her to engage extensively with research across neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, epigenetics, cell biology, and related mind–body disciplines. Astrid integrates insights from these fields into her hypnotherapy and coaching practice, with an emphasis on evidence-informed application, appropriate referral, and interdisciplinary awareness.
Through this integrative approach, she supports individuals in achieving meaningful and sustainable improvements in well-being.
