The concept of a person as a single unified whole does not accord with most people’s experience although on the other hand (no pun intended) the everyday concept of the individual is basically spoken of as if singular. Our three speakers, Gill Smith, Oli Hollis and Claudia Neilsen will explore some core assumptions and show how they use various forms of parts therapy in their work with patients.
Claudia will be describing the concept and use of Ego States as a type of parts therapy. Gill takes an eclectic approach and will describe how she works with patients and Oli Hollis will be showing how the basic concept of a parts therapy can be used with a wide variety of issues, almost like a Swiss army knife, for almost any situation where the patient/ client feels conflicted between wanting to do one behaviour, but repeatedly finding that they do another. there should also be time for open discussion with participants.
Claudia Neilsen was born in Brazil of German parents but has been in the UK for over 50 years and is a mother and grandmother. In her early life she worked in business but her strong interest in what it means to be a human being drew her back to psychology, which she had studied in Brazil, and in the 90’s she was awarded an MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Regents College – City University). This was followed by another MA in the Study of Mysticism and Religious Experience (University of Kent) which allowed her to explore another life-long interest, spirituality. Her PhD work was on the under-researched area of therapist’s views on personal mortality and ideas of post-mortem consciousness and the influence on the work with clients. In addition she has a post grad diploma in Applied Hypnosis from UCL (University College London). She has been working as psychotherapist for over 25 years which includes 13 years in a medical practice in the NHS. She now works solely in private practice.
Dr Gill Smith is a retired consultant psychiatrist who has worked in the NHS and the independent sector. She has been using hypnosis within her clinical practice since 1982 and is involved with training in Northern Counties. She has a personal interest in the application of mindfulness and in Compassion Focused Therapy. She is currently based in Edinburgh where she is working for the Marie Curie hospice as a hypnotherapist. Since lockdown, she has been doing virtual hypnotherapy sessions with most referrals coming from Marie Curie and Maggie’s Centre.
Oli Hollis has been using hypnosis with NHS and private patients and clients since 2014. He specialises in treating patients experiencing chronic pain. In the NHS he works in a small pain team alongside consultants and clinical psychologists. The non-pharmacological components of the therapy delivered to patients contains protocols and ideas taken from CBT and ACT which he uses together with hypnosis.
