This blended learning course is designed to support healthcare professionals in gastroenterology who are interested in exploring the use of Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy (GDH) within their clinical practice. Developed and delivered by a multi-disciplinary team who work within gastroenterology in the NHS, the programme offers a combination of online modules, live virtual sessions, and in-person experiential learning to introduce key concepts, techniques, and clinical applications of hypnosis in the context of functional gut disorders.
NB: Students should only treat with clinical hypnosis those conditions that they are qualified to treat without hypnosis
As a safe-guard for clients / patients, we will only train health care professionals who are eligible for membership of BSCAH.

Course Components:
- Pre-Course Module: Foundations of Adjunctive Clinical Hypnosis: Therapeutic Communication (approx. 2 hours, self-directed)
- Live Online Training: Three days covering relaxation, symptom management, and clinical application.
Day one: Hypnosis for relaxation
Day two: Hypnosis for symptom management
Day three: Applying hypnosis to accompanying symptoms and in practice
- Face-to-Face Training: One full day of hands-on practice and peer case discussion in Manchester.
- Peer Support: One compulsory session plus access to five optional sessions over 12 months.
Aim: to develop students’ skills and knowledge in hypnosis, with specific attention to working with Irritable bowel syndrome and other gut disorders.
By the end of the course, we will have demonstrated how to
1. recognise and evaluate whether hypnosis is appropriate within the patient’s clinical care
2. identify relevant procedures for the application of hypnosis to IBS and other gut related symptoms
3. teach your patients suitable methods of self-hypnosis and use of imagery and suggestion
4. apply hypnotic procedures in your professional work
5. know when and how to refer on as appropriate
Who Should Attend: Healthcare professionals working in gastroenterology, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and allied health professionals interested in enhancing patient care through adjunctive hypnosis.
Certification: Participants who complete all components will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Pre-Course Learning: Foundations of Therapeutic Communication Module: VLE (2 hours)

- Enhancing positive suggestion techniques
- Rapport building and trance-equivalent states
- Informal hypnotic techniques in clinical practice

- Foundations of hypnosis: formal and informal trance
- Recognising trance states
- Historical and theoretical perspectives
- Hypnotisability and suggestibility
- Patient selection, preparation, and consent
- Safety considerations, including abreaction management and factors influencing effective suggestion
Live Blended Learning (24 hours)
- Ethical and professional considerations in clinical hypnosis
- Hypnosis induction techniques
- Deepening strategies and special place imagery
- Self-hypnosis for patient empowerment
- Effective positive suggestion and ego strengthening
