Raising awareness of BSCAH and Clinical Hypnosis

BSCAH aims to promote the use of hypnosis within healthcare settings and for research purposes. Because the use of hypnosis is unregulated in the UK we believe that hypnosis should only be practiced by those who are regulated by a governing body ie GDC, GMC, HCPC, BACP (Accred), BABCP (Accred) etc BSCAH takes the stance that you should only treat with hypnosis something you can treat without hypnosis.

As a healthcare professional there are a number of things you can do to help raise awareness and bring it into mainstream healthcare saving the NHS millions, improving patient outcomes and helping to manage your own stress levels.

The first thing you can do is join BSCAH and get involved. BSCAH is a society made up of healthcare professionals who use or have an interest in clinical hypnosis. Whether you trained with us or not, it doesn’t matter, please come and support our cause.

BSCAH involves its members in its strategising through Meeting of Members which are held a few times a year. This gives the principal officers an opportunity to update members and listen to their feedback and ideas. BSCAH can never go down the route of one size fits all as it is multi-disciplinary society so input from our members is essential to the success of BSCAH and therefore the acceptance of clinical hypnosis as an effective intervention in all branches of healthcare.

Our members can also help us by sending us blogs, social media posts, contributing to our webinars and applying to the Royal colleges etc to speak about clinical hypnosis to their colleagues. We couldn’t do anything without our members, they are BSCAH.

Hypnosis via Osmosis
BSCAH has noticed that clinical hypnosis is becoming more accepted within healthcare, but a lot of our members still come up against barriers within their workplace. This is mainly due to the lack of understanding of colleagues and management. The more you talk about it and use your skills in front of colleagues the more successful you will be in dispelling the myths which surround hypnosis. We encourage you all to call hypnosis; hypnosis – don’t be afraid to use the word. The more colleagues hear the word hypnosis and see how useful it is, the more accepting they will be. Why not join our social media and spread the word….

Helping publicise hypnosis and BSCAH through talks and presentations
Many members are asked to give talks to other professional societies or to work colleagues. This is a great way to spread information about hypnosis and Foundation training with BSCAH. We have some BSCAH PowerPoint slides describing what BSCAH has to offer that you could use, so please contact National Office for these or if you need any other support. Even better is to offer to give a presentation at any conference you might be attending in the course of your clinical work and if this is accepted BSCAH may pay your conference fee so long as BSCAH is promoted.

Volunteering to be on the presenters list
We already have several members who are willing to be called upon to help deliver workshops and training, but we are always very happy to expand the list – many hands make light work! We also always need members to offer to contribute to the various topics covered in the BSCAH monthly webinars. If you are interested in joining the active list, please contact Hilary Walker at natoffice@bscah.co.uk
