We have three presenters: Gill Smith, Jacky Owens , and Phyllis Alden
Aim: The aim of this webinar is to explore ways of helping patients with their existential and other fears at the end of life and ways to facilitate inner peace and acceptance
Learning outcomes:
1. Understand the importance of exploring and addressing the patient’s fears and concerns
2. Learn ways of helping patients to come to terms with their fears and anxieties
About this webinar:
We have three contributors: Dr Gill Smith, Jacky Owens and Phyllis Alden
Gill Smith will describe how she works with patient’s fears and concerns at the end of life.
Jacky Owens ended her nursing career using hypnosis to help patients in the bone marrow transplant unit of UCLH. She will guide you through some of techniques that can help person who is in the palliative phase of their illness.
Phyllis Alden will draw on her extensive work with cancer patients to share how she elicits and helps to resolve the fears and concerns patients often have at the end of life.
Dr Gill Smith is a retired consultant psychiatrist who has worked in the NHS and the independent sector. She has been using hypnosis within her clinical practice since 1982 and is involved with training in Northern Counties. She has a personal interest in the application of mindfulness and in Compassion Focused Therapy. She is currently based in Edinburgh where she is working for the Marie Curie hospice as a hypnotherapist. Since lockdown, she has been doing virtual hypnotherapy sessions with most referrals coming from Marie Curie and Maggie’s Centre.
Jacky Owens (SRN. BSc. MSc) is a member of BSCAH and RSM Section of Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine and has a background in oncology nursing. She worked for five years in UCLH as a nurse hypnotherapist in the bone marrow transplant unit and in the oncology unit. Health anxiety is prevalent in this group of patients.
Phyllis Alden is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who worked in a variety of fields including Adult Mental Health, Pain, and Spinal Cord Injury before finding her real clinical love, Oncology and Palliative Care. For a number of years before ‘retiring’ from the NHS, she worked exclusively in cancer care.
She has been using hypnosis in clinical practice for over 30 years and has been committed to the development of hypnotic approaches in pain, trauma and oncology. She had been involved in the teaching of hypnotic approaches for many years.
