We should teach self hypnosis so that patients have a lifelong tool with which to help themselves. It is empowering and therefore ego strengthening if they can do it for themselves and also reduces dependency on the therapist or HCP. It gives patients some element of control when they are in a challenging medical situation in that they can relax and use imagery to help themselves.
Thank you for thinking about self hypnosis. Hopefully you’ve remembered that we need to make sure we add some safety suggestions:
The patient should be made aware that
The situation in which they do their self-hypnosis should be appropriate – ie not in the driving seat of their car
They might fall asleep if they are tired so a good idea to set an intended duration for their self-hypnosis
As they have trained themselves in self-hypnosis they may be more susceptible so should avoid ‘doing’ it for entertainment
