We can always learn from others’ experiences and tonight we have three contributors: John Duthie, Paul Slater and …. who will talk about how they are working to integrate hypnosis into their mainstream practice. They will discuss the challenges and successes that they have encountered on their journeys and give some idea of how they view the future of hypnosis within the medical and dental fields.
Learning Outcomes
To understand how hypnosis could be integrated into mainstream practice
To understand some of the challenges that are likely to be encountered and how they might be overcome
John Duthie
John qualified as a Dental Surgeon in 1974 and started his Foundation Training in hypnosis in 1975. He further honed his hypnosis skill at the Liverpool Dental Hospital in the late 1980s and early 90’s treating medically compromised and nervous patients requiring General Anaesthetic and Sedation. He used hypnosis as a tool to maximise the placebo effect and amplify the drug response to reduce complications and speed up treatment thus reducing waiting lists. On the academic side, John was an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, Faculty of GDP. Now retired, he believes that a failure to use hypnosis to enhance drug effects and the healing process is an act of omission and would like to pass on this enthusiasm on to younger working colleagues. To this end, he is starting a study group in Liverpool where participants can come to practice their skills and discuss cases as experience grows.
Paul Slater
Paul is a consultant anaesthetist at Northampton general hospital and a member of BSCAH. He uses hypnosis in his daily practice and trains other medical professionals at local and national level in hypnotic techniques applicable to medical practice.
